Jokowi expresses condolences on death of Hasyim Muzadi

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo expressed his condolences over the death of Hasyim Muzadi, former chairman of Indonesia’s largest Islamic organization, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), from 1999 until 2004, on the sidelines of the President’s working visit in West Kalimantan on Thursday.
“Today, our nation has lost its greatest son, Bapak KH Hasyim Muzadi. He passed away at 6:15 a.m. local time this morning at his house in Malang [East Java]. On behalf of the government and all Indonesian people, I want to express our deep condolences [for this great loss]. May he rest in peace and may God giving him the best place,” said Jokowi, after inaugurating the Nanga Badau cross-border post in Kapuas Hulu regency, West Kalimantan.
The President said Hasyim was an ulema and a great teacher of the nation who always guarded diversity in the country.
“He is a great ulema, an ulema who has always been able to calm situations, comforting our hearts,” said Jokowi in a statement released by the Presidential Office on Thursday.
Hasyim, who served as a member of the Presidential Advisory Board (Wantimpres), passed away at the age of 73 at his residence in the Pesantren Al Hikam Islamic boarding school in Malang. He is to be laid to rest at the Pesantren Al Hikam 2 complex in Depok, West Java. (ebf)
